Former Congressman Daniel B. Maffei Joins the FMC

Daniel B. Maffei was sworn-in on July 18, 2016 as a Commissioner of the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) for a term expiring on June 30, 2017.

Mr. Maffei was nominated on November 19, 2015, confirmed by the United States Senate on June 29, 2016 and appointed to the Commission by the President July 18, 2016.

A native of Syracuse, New York, Commissioner Maffei worked as an aide to both Members of the House of Representatives and the United States Senate. He later served two non-consecutive terms representing the 24th and 25th Congressional Districts of New York during the 111th (2009-2011) and 113th (2013-2015) Congresses respectively. Prior to entering office at the Federal Maritime Commission, Commissioner Maffei was serving at the U.S. Department of Commerce.

“I am very pleased that Dan Maffei has joined the Federal Maritime Commission,” said Chairman Mario Cordero. “Commissioner Maffei is a committed public servant who has a serious-minded approach to examining policy matters. He is an excellent addition to the Commission and I look forward to working with him through his term.”

In addition to his previous public service, Commissioner Maffei worked as a journalist, a campaign manager, a business executive, and a college lecturer.

“I am very honored by the President’s appointment and the Senate’s confirmation to serve on a Commission so vital to the nation’s commerce. Our maritime transportation system continues to adapt to a changing, globalized world,” said Commissioner Maffei. “I am eager to work with Chairman Mario Cordero and my fellow Commissioners to address the many maritime commerce issues that lay ahead in a way that maximizes future benefits to American workers, farmers and businesses.”

Commissioner Maffei is a graduate of: Brown University (B.A., History 1986); Columbia University (M.S., Journalism 1991); and Harvard University (M.P.P. 1995). He is married and has one child, a daughter.

The Federal Maritime Commission is responsible for regulating the Nation’s international ocean transportation for the benefit of exporters, importers, and the American consumer. The Commission’s mission is to foster a fair, efficient, and reliable international ocean transportation system while protecting the public from unfair and deceptive practices.
