Malcom McLean Award Presented to Commissioner Dye

An organization representing intermodal trucking firms that do business at ports in New York and New Jersey recognized Commissioner Rebecca Dye for her work enhancing the U.S. freight delivery system and improving cargo and equipment velocity.

The Association of Bi-State Motor Carriers bestowed the “Malcom McLean Award” on Commissioner Dye during its annual awards luncheon held on September 9, 2019, in Kenilworth, NJ.  The award recognizes the individual whose contributions over the previous year advanced the intermodal container industry.

Commissioner Dye was awarded this distinction for her work to maintain the reliability and competitiveness of the ocean supply chain.  She was cited in particular for her efforts on behalf of the Commission in two undertakings: the Supply Chain Innovation Teams, which addressed congestion and infrastructure issues; and the Fact Finding 28 investigation of detention and demurrage practices of ocean carriers and marine terminal operators.

“We felt it was important to recognize Commissioner Dye for the forward-thinking initiatives she has put forth throughout her tenure at the Federal Maritime Commission,” said Lisa Yakomin, President of the Association of Bi-State Motor Carriers.  “Her strong leadership has resulted in a high level of communication amongst all stakeholders, directing us towards a climate of greater understanding and cooperation.”

In addition to the Malcom McLean Award, Commissioner Dye was presented with a Joint Legislative Resolution from the New Jersey Senate and General Assembly honoring her leadership on supply chain policy issues.

“Malcom McLean revolutionized the international freight delivery system because he asked himself, ‘isn’t there a better way?’ That is a thought worth keeping in mind as we examine challenges facing intermodal shipping today.   What is the ‘better way’ that boosts the performance and competitiveness of our Nation’s international freight delivery system.  An obvious answer is that direct, personal engagement among leaders of the industries that Malcom McLean’s containerization concept linked together can produce a ‘better way’.  In that respect, I owe this award to you, the industry leaders who volunteered your time and expertise in the efforts I’ve led to develop commercial solutions to various international shipping challenges,” said Commissioner Dye.
