January 2022 Activity Report
STATEMENTS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
The FMC met in both open and closed session to be briefed on efforts to address detention and demurrage, improve supply chain data transparency, and an ongoing investigation of Canadian government regulations that affect U.S. flag Great Lakes shipping. The Commission was also advised of the work its Area Representatives are doing at locations key to shipping around the Nation.
The passenger cruise sector has implemented standards and safeguards that allow a vital part of the travel and hospitality industries to operate while managing health risks to vessel crew and passengers. Federal Maritime Commission Commissioner Louis E. Sola summarized this nearly two-year effort in the final report issued today on Fact Finding 30.
The FMC will increase the maximum penalties assessed for statutory violations effective January 15, 2022, as required by the Federal Civil Penalties Inflation Adjustment Act of 2015. The increases are tied to the rate of inflation.
The FMC invites comments on its Proposed FY 2022-2026 Strategic Goals and Stewardship Objective, which were released today. Comments on the Commission’s Proposed Strategic Goals and Objective must be submitted on or before January 31, 2022.
Commissioner Louis E. Sola was honored by the Panama Canal Authority (PCA) with the award of its Master Key and Honorary Lead Pilot distinction.
